Report: Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland suggested Jonathan Martin ‘punch’ Richie Incognito
According to a story published by Pro Football Talk, when Martin's agent called Ireland about concerns over his client being bullied, the Miami GM responded by saying that Martin should punch Incognito.
Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland had an old-school solution to his team's bullying problem.
Ireland told the agent for Jonathan Martin that the victimized offensive line should just go "punch" Richie Incognito, according to a story posted late Wednesday night on Pro Football Talk.
The article, citing multiple league sources, said that Ireland received a call from Martin's agent, Rick Smith, before the second-year lineman out of Stanford left the team last week. When Smith complained about the abuse his client was subjected to at the hands of the now-suspended Incognito, Ireland suggested that Martin needed to physically confront his tormentor.
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin suspended Incognito on Sunday after it was revealed that a voicemail Incognito left on Martin's phone contained a racial slur, crude threats against Martin and his mother before it ended with Incognito saying, "I'll kill you."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell picked noted New York lawyer Ted Wells on Wednesday to conduct an investigation into the bullying accusations. Wells' report will be made public.
Philbin had little to say when he faced the media on Wednesday other than to defend his locker room and point to the NFL's probe as the reason for his silence.
"If the review reveals anything that needs to be corrected, we will take all necessary measures to fix it and make sure it doesn't happen again," Philbin said.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said in a statement: "We take this situation seriously. As the owner, I am committed to creating a professional environment for all of the members of the Dolphins family. Once the review is completed and I have all of the facts, we will respond accordingly."
According to an ESPN report, Martin — who has two years left on his contract — wants to continue to play football.
